Ebbe Sand transferred from Brøndby IF to Schalke 04 in the summer of 1999 and quickly became one of the club's most popular players. With his goal-scoring ability, work ethic, and strong personality, he became a central figure in the club's history.

In the 2000/01 season, Sand became the Bundesliga's top scorer with 22 goals, and he helped win the German cup competition in both 2001 and 2002. He played for Schalke until the summer of 2006, when he retired from active football.
