The club was established as an American sister club to Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara and played at the Home Depot Center in California, sharing the stadium with local rivals LA Galaxy.

The 2009 season was one of the club's stronger periods under head coach Preki. Featuring key players such as Sacha Kljestan, Jonathan Bornstein, Paulo Nagamura and goalkeeper Zach Thornton, Chivas USA finished fourth in the MLS Western Conference and qualified for the playoffs.
